Reports emerged on Saturday morning that the Lilywhites were interested in the former Burnley youngster and the Saddlers boss took the decision to leave the 21-year-old out of his squad for the 1-1 draw with Peterborough.

“Josh is not here today - there are one or two things going on,” Keates told the Express and Star.

“We have had an offer for him and I had to make a decision that was best for the group. He hasn’t travelled with us.

“A concrete offer has been tabled and I had to make a decision for the football club and I think that was justified today.

“What happens over the next two weeks with Josh will happen.”

Alex Neil is likely to look to boost his attacking options in the January transfer window after a host of injuries to key men in the final third.

Ginnelly has scored four goals this season having joined Walsall after being released by the Clarets in the summer.

Having moved to Turf Moor from Shrewsbury in 2015 he had loan spells with the Saddlers, Lincoln and Tranmere among others during his time in East Lancashire.
