League One and League Two voted on Tuesday to end the campaign, with just the play-offs to be contested.

Non-league football was ended in April, although the National League may yet have the play-offs.

North End’s Josh Earl and Josh Ginnelly were on loan at Ipswich and Bristol Rovers respectively in League One.

Ipswich called time on Earl’s loan at the start of May when it was due to finish.

They could have extended it just in the case the vote was to continue the season but the Suffolk side chose not to so.

Ginnelly’s loan is also now officially over but he had been out anyway with a hip injury.

Because Ginnelly and Earl’s loans were standard ones running from window to window, they would not be permitted to play for PNE when the season resumes.

A third player who was out on loan in League One was Connor Simpson at Accrington Stanley.

He is out of contract later this month and has not been offered fresh terms. Three players who were on loan at non-league clubs will be able to part of PNE’s squad for the remaining games.

Adam O’Reilly and Ethan Walker spent time with Stalybridge Celtic, while Jack Baxter was at Clitheroe.

Loans to non-league clubs are done in a different way and do not have to be window to window.

The Championship starts again a week on Saturday, with PNE facing Luton.

The curtailment this week of Leagues One and Two, meant promotion joy for some former North End players.

Billy Jones and Jamie Proctor are at Rotherham, who have been promoted from League One to the Championship.

Proctor, though, has been out on loan at Scunthorpe and AFC Fylde this season.

Right-back Jones made 12 appearances for the Millers in their promotion campaign.

In League Two, Eoin Doyle is celebrating promotion with Swindon, likewise Danny Mayor at Plymouth Argyle and Eddie Nolan at Crewe.

However, there was the agony of relegation for former PNE defender Calum Woods.

He joined Tranmere last summer and the Wirral club have been relegated from League One.

They argued long and hard against unweighted points per game being used, pointing out they had a game in had and had won their last three games.

But that fell on deaf ears, meaning League Two football for Tranmere next season.
