Preston North End boss Paul Heckingbottom does not want to rely on loan players so much, moving forwards, but knows it’s a market the club cannot ignore.
The Lilywhites’ chief has spoken about breaking the ‘cycle’ of losing loan stars at the end of seasons and, effectively, starting again. Permanent signings like Andrew Moran, Odel Offiah and Thierry Small represent a step forward in that regard but this summer will still see some major players return to parent clubs.
So, Preston will strive to redress that balance and bring in their own players where possible. But, the fact remains that real quality can be added via the loan market and therefore, you would expect PNE to still utilise it. One thing North End have added with their successful loans, of late, is a reasonable degree of experience.
Kaine Kesler-Hayden, last season’s Player of the Year, had four spells away from Aston Villa before his move to Deepdale. This year, both Lewis Dobbin and Alfie Devine arrived for the fourth loan stint of their careers. With that in mind - and the tendency for PNE to eye attacking loans - we look at some potential options for the upcoming summer.

5. Amario Cozier-Duberry (Brighton)
There was some speculation towards the end of last year that Cozier-Duberry could make the switch to a Championship club, amid strong form for Bolton Wanderers. He has been out since late January with knee ligament damage but was playing a key role in Wanderers' promotion push, with six goals and nine assists. Gained some Championship experience with Blackburn Rovers, previously, and should now back himself to make a real impact in the second tier. | Getty Images

6. Louie Barry (Aston Villa)
Barry ripped it up for Stockport County in the 2024/25 season. Loans to Hull City and Sheffield United followed, but he had an injury hit 2025. Barry made nine appearances for the Blades and hasn't played since late October, due to a knee injury. The forward headed back to Stockport in February and should return for the final few matches of the season. If he impresses and keeps himself fit, Barry may be hoping for third time lucky in the Championship this summer. | Getty Images

7. Divin Mubama (Man City)
It's hard to gauge whether Preston would stand any chance here, given Mubama's stock at Man City. But, after a flying start to his Stoke City loan, injury struck and he hasn't scored since early November. It'll be interesting to see whether another Championship loan transpires in the summer. If so, you'd still expect there to be lots of interest. | Getty Images

8. Omari Kellyman (Chelsea)
Another attacking midfielder who has caught the eye in League One this season. Cardiff are promotion bound and Kellyman probably won't be short of summer offers, but PNE have shown they will give attackers a platform to shine. The 20-year-old has scored seven goals. | Jim Brailsford
