The 34-year-old joined the Lilywhites last summer after his departure from Sheffield Wednesday. He scored three goals in 40 appearances.

Smith netted all of those away from home between September and November, scoring at Hull City, West Brom and Millwall.

The former Rotherham United and Swindon Town man has put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal with the Stags and joins for an ‘undisclosed fee’, PNE state.

Mansfield boss Nigel Clough said: “We were a little bit surprised Michael was available. He gives us such a different option to the strikers we currently have.

“He’s a proven goalscorer at this level and I think he will be a very good asset in both penalty areas.

“Michael complements our forwards very well and we’re delighted to bring in two experienced strikers so far.”
