Sunderland, Leeds United and the games Preston North End will be closely watching after transfer decision
Everton officially recalled the midfielder on New Year’s Day
It was fun while it lasted but Harrison Armstrong’s loan spell at Preston North End has come to an end.

Only for now, though, will be the hope clung on to by the Deepdale faithful. Armstrong’s class was instantly apparent and he made a huge impression during his 16 appearances for Paul Heckingbottom’s side. Now, he returns to his parent club after former PNE boss David Moyes was left with little option - given the blows his midfield has suffered.
Idrissa Gana Gueye is away with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, which concludes on January 18. Star man Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall suffered a hamstring injury at Chelsea, on December 14, which could keep him sidelined for another few weeks yet. Attacking midfielder Charly Alcaraz also missed Everton’s last game with a mysterious injury.
Moyes started with Tim Iroegbunam, James Garner and Merlin Rohl at Nottingham Forest but the only central midfielders on the bench were Braiden Graham (18) and Callum Bates (20) - neither who have represented the first team yet. Clearly, therefore, Armstrong has a role to play in the first team squad right now.
As reported, the player wants to keep playing for the second half of the season and if that looks unlikely to happen at Everton, he would be open to rejoining Preston. With that in mind, the Toffees’ upcoming fixtures will be of great interest to supporters of the Lilywhites - as well as the club.
Two Premier League games, in the space of four days at home to Everton and strugglers Wolves, could well see Armstrong play a part. It would be a surprise if Moyes didn’t stick with a winning side against the Bees; it would also be a surprise if Armstrong wasn’t utilised at all in either match given his talent.
After that it’s Sunderland at home in the FA Cup third round, which has all the feel of a fixture the teenager might start. Aston Villa away and Leeds United at home follow, before a trip to Brighton just a couple of days before the January transfer window comes to a close.
What Armstrong said amid recall rumours
Speaking to the Lancashire Post last month, he said: “Whatever decision is made, I just hope it's the best for my development. I'd love to stay here and contribute to a season. Hopefully, we can get in and amongst the play-offs but like I said, I'm just leaving it to the hands of the people who control it and just getting on with my football.”
