Jack Walton departed Deepdale last month, less than a year after joining, re-signing for Dundee United, while thee remains a possibility that Dai Cornell could extend his stay with PNE.

Now, Alan Nixon is reporting that Lee Nicholls is leaving Huddersfield to join North End and is prepared to fight for his place in the team.

The Lancashire Post reported last week that the club are believed to be in ‘positive discussions’ with an ‘experienced’ shot-stopper to replace Walton - and Nicholls would certainly fit the bill.

The 33-year-old has been first-choice goalkeeper at Huddersfield Town since 2021 and played a key role in the Terriers reaching the Championnship playoff final in 2022. In a standout season, he kept 19 clean sheets, was named the club’s Blue and White Player of the Season and featured in the Championship Team of the Season.

Before joining Huddersfield, he spent five years at Milton Keynes Dons and won promotion to League One with them in 2019. He also went up from the fourth-tier with Bristol Rovers in 2016 in the last of six EFL loan spells he had from parent club Wigan Athletic.
