Speaking at the club’s media day, Lowe was in good spirits, two days into North End’s pre-season schedule.

The North End boss has already brought in two new players, goalkeepers Freddie Woodman and David Cornell - Tom Bayliss and Josh Earl both left the club this week too.

Despite there being just a couple of days before the Lilywhites open their pre-season schedule at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium on Saturday, 3pm, Lowe is hopeful of adding to his ranks.

He told the Lancashire Post: “We've been close, we've been down the lines. We've certainly had targets and contract proposals out there.

"What I don't want to do is sometimes I dwell on them in terms of making sure it's the right one and character references as well.

"They could be the best players inside or outside of the division but you've got to make sure their character is the right fit. We have to make sure that element is right.

"Could something happen over the next few days? Possibly, yeah.

"I could go away at any point and the phone has rung. We've certainly got some irons in the fire and some good quality players.”

There are no complaints from Lowe in the support that he is getting from higher up. Away from the pitch, there has been extra work put into PNE’s Euxton training ground.

When it comes to matters on the pitch, the Liverpudlian also knows there will be resources at his disposal.

He said: “I'm 100 per cent getting backed. Craig Hemmings and Peter Ridsdale have been fantastic since I've walked through the door.

"I've got everything I've asked for in pre-season. I've got new coaching cameras at the training ground and it's been revamped.

"They're backing me for players, don't get me wrong we have a budget, I don't have billions to play with and I will stick to the budget.

"We need to recruit smart and that's certainly what we're doing.

"I'm looking forward to the players that we're looking to get in and I'm really looking forward to the next four weeks with the team before we start.”
