Preston North End legend Sir Tom Finney dies aged 91

The footballing world was in shock after learning of the death of Preston North End legend, Sir Tom Finney.

Tributes poured in on Twitter as the news emerged on Friday evening of the death of Sir Tom, 91.

Preston Supporters’ Group tweeted: “We are desperately sad to hear the news that Sir Tom Finney has passed away. True Icon and Legend doesn’t do him justice.”

PNE players past and present flooded Twitter with their tributes to legend Sir Tom Finney.

Striker Kevin Davies wrote: “Tonight we have lost a footballing legend. A true gent and a loyal servant to his beloved PNE. RIP Sir Tom Finney.”

Ben Davies put: “RIP Sir Tom, what an inspiration.”

Iain Hume posted: “Just heard the news about Sir Tom Finney! Devastating! Had the pleasure to meet him a few yrs ago, he’s an absolute legend.”

England hero and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker said: “Sir Tom Finney has left us. One of the greatest players this country has ever seen, and a true gentleman.”

A statement on PNE’S official website said: “Sir Tom was the greatest player to ever play for Preston North End and one of the all time greats for England.

The thoughts of everyone at the Club, and those connected with it, are with his family at this time.

The Club will be making an official statement on Saturday 15th February 2014, but have no other comment at this time.”

PNE star John Welsh wrote: “Saddened to hear about the passing of Sir Tom Finney a legend of the English game,am sure he’ll get a great send off at tomorrow’s game.”

Colleague David Buchanan said: “RIP Sir Tom. Heard so many great things about a true footballing great. Hopefully the boys can do him proud with 3 points tomorrow.”

Former PNE player Kevin Kilbane tweeted: “I’m proud to say I grew up on the same street as Sir Tom Finney. Very sad to hear of his passing.”

Ex-Lilywhite Sean St Ledger added: “Absolute pleasure and honour to meet the man Sir Tom Finney in my time at PNE FC.”

The Football Supporters’ Federation posted: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Preston and England great Sir Tom Finney, who has died aged 91. A true legend of the game.”
