Bristol City 0-2 Preston North End: Aston Villa loanee dazzles as Lilywhites triumph in Ashton Gate thriller

PNE’s impressive start to 2026 continued on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 win against early play-off rivals Bristol City.

PNE secured a huge three points against their early-season play-off rivals Bristol City to continue their winning start to 2026.

Man of the match Lewis Dobbin opened the scoring after eight minutes before Alfie Devine netted his second goal in three games after the break to seal the 2-0 victory.

The visitors shot out of the blocks, with the Everton loanee lining up an effort from the edge of the box, which headed just wide of the park.

However, Dobbin would get his goal just eight minutes into the affair as PNE capitalised on a defensive error from the hosts.

Max O’Leary’s poor clearance fell to the feet of Adam Randell, who was dispossessed on the halfway line after great power and tenacity by Jordan Thomspon to reclaim the ball.

The midfielder then played through the 23-year-old, who was able to slot past the back-tracking Robins keeper to open the scoring and net his seventh of the season.

Despite a lightning start from Heckingbottom’s side, Bristol City did begin to grow back into the contest during a thrilling first-half affair.

Anis Mehmeti, Sinclair Armstrong and Rob Atkinson both shot wide for City, who did have a number of chances to equalise in the opening 45 minutes.

After riding a wave of pressure from Gerhard Struber’s men, PNE ended the first period on top, with Dobbin once again causing the Robins’ backline problems.

Thompson and the forward combined once again just before the break, with the latter’s shot on the edge of the box going over the bar.

North End started the second half in a similar fashion to how they finished the first, with Devine letting the hosts off the hook after brilliant trickery. The Spurs loanee cut inside and was shown inside by Jason Knight but fired just over the bar.

Ben Whiteman then had an opportunity moments later as the ball fell to him on the edge of the area but the skipper’s first-time effort sailed over the bar.

Struber rolled the dice less than 10 minutes into the second half making a triple change, which saw the introduction of former PNE striker Emil Riis.

That did spark some life into City’s attack, with the ex-North End man firing a good chance over the bar just moments after coming on.

The hosts kept coming, with Ross McCrorie wasting a well-worked move by Bristol City to place an effort wide of the mark.

And that would prove costly as North End doubled their lead after 70 minutes. Devine’s efforts would pay off as he netted his second goal in three games with a tidy finish.

After Rob Dickie came to the rescue to deny the Spurs loanee, his follow-up opportunity was struck past the out-stretched O’Leary from a tight angle.

Heckingbottom’s men weren’t quite home and dry, though, with the hosts chucking everything forward in the closing stages to find a way back into the fixture.

But the Lilywhites stayed resolute at the back and limited Struber’s side to very little and were able to secure the maximum points after a thrilling encounter.

The triumph moves PNE up to fourth in the Championship standings and are now just three points away from the automatic positions.
