PNE knocked Fulham out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night

His team mate and manager are rooting for Liverpool away, but Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has a different wish in the Carabao Cup.

The Lilywhites are through to round four, having knocked out Sunderland, Harrogate Town and Fulham so far in the competition. PNE won the longest ever League Cup penalty shootout on Tuesday night, with Ryan Ledson scoring the penalty number 16 to send Preston through.

Woodman kept out Jorge Cuenca and blasted home his own spot kick, with the Deepdale faithful chanting his name every time a Fulham player stepped up from 12 yards. Now, Woodman is dreaming of a trip to his boyhood and hometown club.

North End’s number one said: “I want (Crystal) Palace away, so I can go back home and see my friends. But yeah, I have never played at Selhurst Park, so it would be nice. But, people probably don’t want that do they?!”

On the Fulham win, he added: “As soon as the final whistle went, I wanted to be a hero and get the club into the next round. My pen was good to be fair, wasn’t it?! I just wanted to put my head down and just rip it to be honest. I always think if the ‘keeper saves it and you rip it, then it is what it is. Jokes aside, the performance in 90 minutes was brilliant really.

“A Premier League side as good as Fulham come here and I felt we dealt with them really well. Out of possession, we were great. We scored a really good goal and we had moments to win the game as well. We’ve been working really, really hard on the training pitch - trying to get the manager’s new ways and I feel like we’re working hard towards what he wants.

“Honestly, the (fans) were brilliant and really got behind me. Goalkeeping is a tough, tough position. It is lonely at times and in that goal, when those penalties were coming, it was a lonely place. But, I stuck with it and finally got the result. This place has got it’s mojo back really, hasn’t it? Tonight was a great moment and I am excited for Sunday.”
