Verdict: Preston North End gave a good account against Premier League Wolves in ...

For the second time in the Carabao Cup, Ryan Lowe named four academy prospects on his bench on Tuesday night in the 2-1 defeat to Wolves, also using Jacob Slater, 17, and Lewis Leigh, 18, for the second time.

Mikey O’Neill, who made his Championship debut last season, and Dama Amaral, who went on the pre-season camp in Spain, were also named amongst the subs though did not make it on.

One mystery man warming up with the subs was 16-year-old Kaedyn Kamara, getting his first taste of the first team environment.

"We've got a fantastic academy that needs to be utilised,” Lowe said.

"Jacob Slater, he's been a breath of fresh air hasn't he? I was contemplating starting him but then I realised Traore might play! I'd be throwing him into the fire and I didn't want to do that.

"Then there was Lewis Leigh who came on the pitch and has that aggression when we thought Ali was tiring a little bit.

"Dana and Mikey, and young Kaedyn Kamara who was travelling with us today, a young 16-year-old kid, to see what it's like and the environment.

"I've been watching him over the past few weeks and he's been different class.

"We want that, we want to bring the kids with us to see how it's done. If we can keep plumbing them through from the academy to the first team then it bodes well for the future.”

North End went into the break at Molineux two goals down, which could have been three but for a Dai Cornell penalty save on debut.

PNE picked up after the break but there were no harsh words during the interval by Lowe.

He said: “There wasn't much said at half time, we just made the change and said to the players to have that bit more belief because there's a goal in it for you, we knew that.

"In the first half we got in behind them a couple of times and probably made the wrong decision.

"The second half was just about believing that you can get an opportunity.”
