North End are closing in on their opening day clash with Wigan Athletic on July 30 and there is still work to be done in the transfer market.

Lowe wants two strikers and wing backs for either side. Preston are next in action on Wednesday as they welcome Hearts to Deepdale and the hope for Lowe is that he has a couple in by that point.

He said: “We need four players, I spoke to Peter Ridsdale and told him that.

"This week will be a tough week of going and doing what we need to do to get the right ones. We’re speaking to people every day, the phone calls are relentless but we need players to make sure that we can compete.

"Ideally we'd like one or two in before Wednesday so we can get some minutes under their belt with the way we play.

"There are a lot of teams coming back from overseas soon, we have to make sure we get the right ones but they're out with parent clubs and we've got to respect that.

"There are a few players out of contract who are maybe just waiting for the clock to tick down.

"If they've not got anything now they're not going to get anything any time soon are they? They need to make a decision. That's where I'm at with some of them.”

North End have had to be patient when it comes to Premier League clubs and loans for their players.

There is always a wait in pre-season for teams to have a look at their youngsters before allowing them to temporarily depart – Lowe is hoping that wait is over.

He said: “I think they will be available this week sometime because they all come back to the country around Monday or Tuesday. I'm hoping that means some will become available.

"There are lads out there who can be signed on a free contract, and there are lads we could look at who are at other clubs but that's the hard part.

"We've just got to keep working and hopefully we can get something sorted.”
