Preston have struggled with injuries this season and were without Gibson and Gibbs as well as the injured quartet of Harry Clarke, Ali McCann, Caleb Wiley and Brad Potts and the suspended Stanley Mills for the trip to Wales.

The severity of the ailments the other injured stars have suffered were already clear, but the extent of the quad injury that forced Gibbs off the field after just 24 minutes in the 4-0 defeat at Birmingham City on Tuesday was not.

Now Alexander has provided an update and it isn’t good news for the on-loan midfielder.

Alexander told The Post at full-time: “Yeah, he's going to be out for a little while, unfortunately.

“He's got an injury that's gonna keep him out for probably a couple of... three months from this point.”

Lewis Gibson returned to action off the bench on Tuesday but did not even make the bench against Wrexham, with Alexander revealing that he pulled out of squad on Saturday morning, and will be sent for a scan to assess his injury.

“He pulled out this morning,” Alexander said. “So he felt something yesterday.

“I think he's gonna go for a scan tomorrow and we'll see how he is on Monday.”

Preston did welcome two injured stars back to action on Saturday, though, with Johnny Kenny starting and Brad Potts coming on off the bench.

Kenny teed up Alfie Devine for his goal with a deflected shot, while Potts missed a great chance to make the match 2-2.
