Preston North End are one of a handful of clubs to be linked with the Pilgrims forward, who scored 22 goals in his first season at Home Park. Plymouth triggered Tolaj’s £1.2million release clause in his Port Vale contract last summer.

Now, a host of sides have been credited with interest in him - including Celtic, Leicester City, Derby County and others. Berne, speaking to Plymouth Live, played with a straight bat when asked if offers for Tolaj have been received.

"I'm not going to go into individuals,” he said. “It's important to say there is no planned sales. The players we have currently got with us are planned to be with us on day one of pre-season. Our plan is to be in a really great position as we go into the start of next season."

Elsewhere on the transfer rumour mill, PNE are one of three clubs to be linked with Swansea City right-back, Josh Key, on Thursday. Portsmouth and Queens Park Rangers are the two other sides said to be keeping tabs on the 26-year-old.

Key has one year left on his Swansea contract, having joined them from Exeter City three years ago. The defender made 34 appearances across all competitions last season, with 112 games played overall for the Welsh club.

In that time, he has scored five goals and assisted eight. Preston could target full-backs this summer but QPR appear most in need of the three clubs linked, while Pompey may have voids to fill should Terry Devlin and/or Jordan Williams leave.
