He suffered from a bout of chickenpox which affected his fitness for large periods of his time at the club. PNE boss Paul Heckingbottom admitted towards the end of last season that the striker had struggled to adjust to English football.

Before joining PNE, Lukovic had enjoyed loan spells at Heerenveen in the Netherlands and Spanish side Las Palmas.

Upon signing for Kaiserslautern, Lukovic said: “The whole club has made a big effort to sign me. I’ve felt a lot of trust placed in me, and I’d like to thank the club’s leadership for that.

“I believe I’m a great fit here. The style of play suits me very well. I work hard, both in training and in games, and I want to repay the passion that has been shown to me.

“I’m looking forward to working with the team and hopefully having a successful season.”
