The 53-year-old saw his fourth stint as Peterborough United boss come to an end in early November, having only picked up 12 points from the first 14 games of the League One campaign.

Now, Ferguson - son of Manchester United legend Sir Alex - is top of the odds for the vacancy at Vale Park. The Valiants parted ways with former Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town chief, Darren Moore, on December 28.

They are rock bottom of the third tier and a seventh defeat in nine league outings proved to be the end of Moore’s tenure. After thrashing Blackpool 5-1 at home, on New Year’s Day, Vale are nine points adrift of safety with 23 games left to play.

It would be a seventh managerial job for Ferguson, who also managed Doncaster Rovers as well as North End and his four spells at Posh. The Scot lasted 49 games at PNE, after being appointed in January 2010.
