Last day of the transfer window could be a manic Monday at Preston North End

Preston North End hope to be busy in the run-up to the close of the transfer window tonight as they look to put the finishing touches to the squad makeover done over the last few weeks.

It has been five in and five out of Deepdale so far, with the potential for more movement in both directions by the 11pm cut-off.

North End are looking for more creativity going forward which points to a winger coming in and perhaps even another striker.

Reinforcing the defence is a priority after Preston accepted a bid in the region of £2m for centre-back Ben Davies from Liverpool.

The 25-year-old will undergo a medical on Merseyside today. Inserted in the deal is a sell-on clause entitling North End to a percentage of any future fee should Liverpool sell Davies.

North End will also take Liverpool's 19-year-old Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg on loan for the rest of the season as part of the deal.

However, they are also looking to bring in another centre-half before tonight's deadline to ensure they have enough options to get through the season.

Speculation cropped up yesterday linking PNE with West Bromwich defender Cedric Kipre.

The Lancashire Post has learned that they actually got close to a loan deal for Kipre earlier in the window but at that stage it looked like he favoured a move to France.

Speaking after PNE’s 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday, Alex Neil felt Davies would see out his contract at Deepdale but that was before Liverpool’s interest changed the landscape.

Josh Earl looks set to go on loan to Burton Albion.

Neil lost two big hitters from the squad last week, Ben Pearson and Darnell Fisher moving to Bournemouth and Middlesbrough respectively.

However, Daniel Johnson signed a two-and-a-half year contract on Friday night.

Commenting on the two departures, Neil said: “Darnell was my first signing here.

“Naturally you build up an affinity and rapport with your players over time.

“I really do wish the both of them well.

“Am I sad to see them go? Of course I am.

“My job now is to work with the lads we have got here and have brought in.

“They are good lads who work really hard and it is my belief they will become really good players.

“Darnell and Ben weren’t the players they are now when I first came in. They worked hard and we worked hard to improve them.

“We are in transition at the moment. The side at the start of the season had Declan Rudd in goal, Pat Bauer, Ben Pearson, Paul Gallagher to an extent, Darnell Fisher.

“The lads who have come in are mainly younger and it will take a little bit of work to get us back to the levels that I think are needed to compete in the top six.”
