Having guided them to promotion from League Two and then put Luton in promotion contention in League One, the Welshman was lured away from Kenilworth Road by Stoke City.

However, he lasted only 11 months there and left last November.

It was his exit which prompted Stoke’s failed attempt to persuade Alex Neil to take the job.

THE REFEREE: John Brooks

The Leicestershire official is in charge of Preston North End’s visit to Luton Town as the Championship restarts after a three-month absence.

This will be the fourth time Mr Brooks has taken charge of a North End game this season.

He refereed both games against Stoke City, the second of which in February had its fiery moments.

The other Lilywhites match he was in charge of was the New Year’s Day defeat to Middlesbrough at Deepdale.
