Greg Cunningham is set to make a return to Preston North End two-and-a-half years after he left Deepdale.

The left-back was sold to Cardiff City in a £4m deal in July 2018 but is now on the way back on loan for the rest of the season.

Cardiff manager Mick McCarthy revealed the impending move after the Bluebids' 2-2 draw with Barnsley on Wednesday night.

McCarthy said: "Greg is going to Preston. I have Joe Bagan and Joe Bennett, so we are a bit overloaded with left-backs."

Cunningham made 111 appearances for North End in a three-season stay between 2015 and 2018.

During his time with Cardiff, he spent time on loan at Blackburn - a loan which was cut short by a knee injury.

When the deal is completed, 29-year-old Cunningham will become North End's fifth signing of the January transfer window.

It will boost Alex Neil's options at left-back and he can play in the centre of defence too.

But he's not seen as a replacement for Ben Davies who is on Celtic's radar.

If Davies does leave in this transfer window, North End will be in the market for a centre-half to replace him.

They have a right-sided centre-half on their shopping list anyway as they look to cover the loss of Patrick Bauer for the rest of the season to injury.
