Former Preston North End boss David Moyes is a European champion with West Ham United

With the game set to go to extra time, former Hull City winger Jarrod Bowen stole in behind the defence to finish and write his name into the history books of the London club.

There were jubilant scenes at full time, and before, with Moyes charging down the touchline to celebrate his side’s last gasp winner, drawing similarities to that of Jose Mourinho when at Porto.

The Scot was ready to go when Bowen broke beyond the backline, fully expecting that moment to decide the game.

“The moment he went through I was edging down the touchline,” Moyes said. “If it was going to be anyone, I thought ‘this is the moment’.

“But I couldn’t do a full Mourinho knee slide as the grass was a bit dry and I’d have ended up on my belly.

“I actually think the last two years have been an incredible journey.

“It’s an incredible achievement to do so well in Europe, you look at some of the very good teams who find it a struggle. It’s great credit, we’ve turned a disappointing season into a super season.”

There was a touching moment post match with Moyes Jr and Sr. David Moyes Sr, 87, joined his son on the pitch to celebrate their success and David Moyes Jr proudly placed his winners’ medal around his neck.

“He was the first one, I thought I should get it round his neck,” said the Hammers boss. “He’s watched a lot over the years and I hope he enjoyed it.”

It is the culmination of over 1,000 games as a manager for Moyes, in a coaching career that started out at Deepdale as he helped PNE to win the Second Division in 2000.

He initially steered the Lilywhites away from the relegation zone before securing a play-off spot the following season, losing out to Gillingham, After their title success 12 months later, Moyes nearly steered Preston to back to back promotions, losing to Bolton 3-0 in the Division One play-off final.
