Port honour Billy's boys
Southport's Trust In Yellow Supporters' Group held a '˜Bingham Boys '“ Heroes of '66' tribute evening at the weekend.
It followed Southport’s 1-1 home draw with Braintree Town on Saturday and was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Southport’s great FA Cup run when –under the management of Billy Bingham – they defeated Second Division Cardiff City in the to reach the fifth round of the tournament.
Some 14,000 fans witnessed the victory at Haig Avenue.
A film of the game’s highlights was shown, following which six members of that team – Ron Smith, Tony Beanland, Terry McDonald, Alan Spence, Colin Alty and Fred Molineux – took the stage to answer questions from the audience.
