PNE v Huddersfield: Memory match

The sides met in the Capital One Cup on August 13, 2012, this the Monday night before the league season started the following weekend.

A later start to the campaign had been planned in so not to clash with the Olympics in London.

PNE fans had witnessed a summer revolution as the squad was overhauled by Graham Westley – the high earners and unwanted players shipped (or frozen) out and replaced by a whole host of new faces.

The starting XI for this first round tie featured 10 summer signings, keeper Thorsten Stuckmann the sole survivor from the season before.

There were three more new faces among the subs, underlining the extent of the changes made by Westley.

Huddersfield came to town as a newly-promoted side in the Championship, having won the League One play-off final at Wembley against Sheffield United.

A look at their squad and staff was a glance into the future as far as North End were concerned.

They were managed by Simon Grayson, with Glynn Snodin his No.2

On their bench that night were Tom Clarke and Calum Woods – Deepdale later to become their workplace.

Preston were worthy winners on the night, better and stronger from their opponents a division higher.

They started brightly, with Nicky Wroe and Lee Holmes catching the eye in midfield.

With only 43 seconds on the clock, John Mousinho’s shot from the edge of the box was parried by Town keeper Alex Smithies, with Jack King putting the rebound wide from a tight angle.

Huddersfield’s first chance was a shot from Lee Novak which he hit straight into Stuckmann’s gloves.

An effort from Jimmy Spencer was blocked by the PNE defence, Oscar Gobern off target with his follow-up.

Spencer then looped a header over Stuckmann’s bar after being found by a knock down from Novak.

North End took the lead in the 29th minute, Jeffrey Monakana taking possession on the right-wing from a quickly-taken throw in.

Monakana lifted a fine chipped cross into the box, King taking advantage of a moment’s hesitation by Smithies to meet it and steer a header into the net,

It was an advantage which Preston doubled five minutes before the interval.

Chris Beardsley was the creator, taking the ball down the side of the box – getting the better of Anthony Gerrard as he did so.

Beardsley crossed from the byline , Wroe on the end of it to steer the ball into the net from six yards.

After the break, Keith Southern ballooned a shot over the bar after being picked out by Spencer’s pass.

North End’s response was a shot from Beardsley which flew just wide.

They had to soak up some Hudderfield pressure for a spell in the second half, Gobern and Novak testing Stuckmann.

Wroe and David Amoo had late chances for the hosts as they saw the game out with a degree of comfort.
