PNE striker goes under the knife

The Scotsman went under the knife in London on Wednesday and the operation went very well according to PNE boss Simon Grayson.

May, 23, damaged three ligaments in his right knee in the 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on November 28, shortly after coming on as a substitute.

One of the ligaments has healed naturally after a period of rest and rehabilitation, with the surgeon able to concentrate on repairing the other two.

Grayson said: “Stevie went in on Wednesday for the operation and the surgeon was really pleased with how it went.

“At the time, he did damage to three ligaments, one of which has since healed itself which is great news.

“The other two had the work done to repair them, with one of those not needing as much work as first thought.

“It is still going to be six-nine months but the surgeon was pleased with the outcome.

“That is good news for Stevie, he will get as much attention and care from everyone on his road to recovery.

“Six to nine months is the standard recovery time with the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) which has needed the most repair.

“He didn’t have the operation done a few weeks ago because they wanted him to have the time for the other ligament to repair by itself - if that one had needed work done, in the long-term it could have caused him problems.

“We are delighted that has healed naturally.”
