PNE land Oldham cup tie

Preston North End have been drawn at home to Oldham Athletic in the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Deepdale clash will be played in the week beginning August 22.

It is only the second time that the clubs have been drawn together in the competition in its various guises over the years.

In January 1969, they drew 1-1 at Deepdale, with North End winning the return leg 1-0 at Boundary Park.

PNE booked their place in the second round by beating Hartlepool 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Eoin Doyle scored the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.

Oldham were 2-1 winners over Wigan, Ryan Flynn and Josh Law on target.

They are managed by former Preston midfielder Steve Robinson.

Preston and Oldham met only last month in a pre-season friendly, Simon Grayson’s men winning 3-1 with goals from Doyle and Joe Garner (2).

North End were seeded in last night’s draw which was made live on Sky Sports. The draw was delayed by more than half an hour after two ties went to penalties.

There was a plum draw for Morecambe, with them paired with Bournemouth at the Globe Arena.

It was reward for their superb 5-4 win away at Rotherham United.

Jim Bentley’s men will be eyeing another cup shock against the Premier League outfit.
