PNE defender ruled out for the season

Woods had a scan on his right knee on Thursday which confirmed damage to both the cruciate and medial ligaments.

He was hurt in a challenge with Oldham defender Jamie Reckford in the 15th minute of the Boundary Park clash, with him stretchered off the pitch – he later left the ground on crutches.

North End manager Simon Grayson said: “We are obviously disappointed for the player and us a football club.

“Calum has done his medial ligament and also his cruciate ligament which is going to rule him out for about nine months unfortunately.

“It is a big blow for Calum, I am really gutted for him because he was one of the outstanding performers, especially in the second-half of last season.

“He’s so versatile and gives everything – that was probably his downfall the other night.

“Calum gave everything in the tackle when he probably should have pulled out a little bit, but you can’t take that out of players.”

It is likely to that North End will seek a replacement in the transfer market, with it being such a long-term injury.

Grayson said: “It is going to be a difficult road for him.

“We have suffered quite a few long-term injuries and I think the lad will get experience from other players and talk to them.

“It is hugely disappointing but he will be given the best opportunity to come back fitter and stronger and back into the team when the time is right.”
