No positives from Boston defeat

'I can't take anything positive from it... I'm frustrated, angry, disappointed and now we have to look at ourselves, put it behind us and get back to basics.'

It is safe to say that Chorley chief Matt Jansen was not impressed with his side’s 2-0 defeat at Boston on Saturday.

Speaking after the game the Magpies boss was open about his frustration at the display.

Ashley Hemmings gave the home side the lead in the 37th minute as he pounced on a James Clifton cross.

And the game was all but sealed for the visitors when Kabongo Tshimanga caught the Magpies defence napping just two minutes into the second half, as he converted a long throw after Jansen’s side had failed to clear their lines.

And Jansen says both goals could have been stopped if the Magpies had stuck to the basics that served them so well last term.

He said: “The feeling is frustration really.

“I’ve said it in the dressing room.

“The things we have prided ourselves on last season were not there.

“Whether it was sloppy passes or anything.

“They have scored from not closing the ball down.

“They have caused us problems with one long straight ball, they have scored from a long throw-in.

“I don’t mind if they win the first header, but then the ball bouncing in front of the keeper and them tapping it in -– those little things that we were so solid at last season were missing.

“Granted we were forced to go to four at the back, which is not our normal system, so that togetherness, that team spirit, that being difficult to beat was lacking and it is very frustrating.”

Defender Scott Leather was withdrawn in the 11th minute just after picking up a yellow card, but Jansen says that was due to injury rather than tactics.

But he says his men cannot use the excuse of a shift from three at the back to a flat back four as a reason for the defeat.

He said: “He was struggling with his chest, we were forced into it so early on to go to four at the back.

“Stevie Jordan is still injured so we did not have a like-for-like substitution.

“We were forced into that but that does not stop you being professional, sticking together and organising.

“We did not do that and that is the most disappointing thing for me.

“I’ve said it in the dressing room, and they will look at themselves and this coming week we will work on the basics and being difficult to beat again and go from there.”

Chorley’s new signing Matty Hughes came off the bench to make his debut.

But Jansen says it was not a game to judge the forward on, given the position the Magpies were in when he replaced Terry Gornell in the 69th minute.

Though the Chorley boss believes he will be a good addition to his side.

He said: “It was difficult circumstances, we were playing three up and going gung-ho and leaving players up, and invited them on to us.

“He was feeding on scraps because we were knocking long balls to him at times.

“He is proven at this level, he has only trained with us once prior to Saturday.

“Time will tell, hopefully he will be a good addition for us.”
