Morecambe midfielder hails the players' spirit ahead of Mansfield Town trip

Having won at Barrow AFC three days earlier, the Shrimps made it back-to-back victories in midweek with two stoppage-time goals giving them a 2-1 win.

Carlos Mendes Gomes had cancelled out Brandon Thomas-Asante’s strike for the Ammies before Wildig ensured what had seemed the unlikeliest of three points, diverting home Toumani Diagouraga’s shot.

It was the 28-year-old’s seventh of the season, keeping Morecambe fourth in the League Two table ahead of today’s trip to Mansfield Town.

Wildig said: “The belief was there. If we’re going to do something this season, these are the wins you need to grind out and we’re looking forward to the run-in.

“I said at the start of the season we’ve had good squads over the years.

“We had to do our talking on the pitch this year, and with 16 games to go, we’ve put ourselves in a good position to do something.

“The only disappointing thing is we score two goals in the 92nd minute and this place would have been bouncing. To do it with no fans here is very unfortunate.”

Tuesday’s strike made it goals in consecutive games for Wildig after he opened the scoring at Barrow.

That was his first for 10 games, a run stretching back to December’s winner against Harrogate Town.

Since then, the midfielder has been one of those players to have suffered the effects of Covid-19.

He explained: “I had Covid and it wiped me out a bit.

“I was ill in bed for four or five days, it surprised me how much Covid affected me.

“I felt like I needed a goal and hopefully I can get up to speed, the games are every three days.”
