Liam McAlinden’s first goal for the club, ironically, against one of his former sides, made it back-to-back wins and clean sheets for the Shrimps

Though the win kept Morecambe sixth in the League Two table, they are only a point off the automatic promotion places and five behind the new leaders - and their next opponents - Cambridge United.

Adams said: “To get a win against the team at the top of the table is a very good victory for us.

Morecambe 1 Cheltenham Town 0: First-half goal gives the Shrimps victory

“I thought we started very well. We changed formation to a diamond because Cheltenham play 3-5-2 and we thought we could get down the side of them - and it worked out that way.

“We deservedly went ahead in the game with a good ball down the side and McAlinden finished it off.

“He could have scored earlier in the first half. We had good opportunities, we had a disallowed goal, which was offside and we were delighted with the first-half performance.”

After the break, the visitors had the greater possession with Morecambe keeper Kyle Letheren making a close-range stop from Alfie May and Callum Wright sending an effort narrowly over.

At the other end, the Shrimps had opportunities on the counter-attack but were let down by their final ball.

Adams said: “Credit to Cheltenham, they changed formation in the second half and started to get back into the game - but they didn’t create many good openings.

“They became a bit gung-ho in the second half, it became a front five at times for them.

“On the flip side, we could have counter-attacked at times, which we did but without finding that final ball into the box.

“We could have maybe got a second goal but we’re delighted with another win and a clean sheet.”
