Loyal Cottrell snubs Fylde to sign new deal

Chorley's midfield maestro Jake Cottrell allegedly snubbed an approach from the Magpies fierce rivals AFC Fylde before committing his future to Victory Park.

It is understood Fylde put seven days notice on Cottrell, but just a day after star striker Josh Hine joined Salford City for an undisclosed fee, Cottrell pledged his loyalty to Matt Jansen’s men by tying himself to the club until the end of the 2016/17 season. And Jansen says it would have been a massive blow if Cottrell, who was not under contract until last Wednesday, had left.

He said: “To have lost two big players in the space of days would have been massive but fortunately Jake has shown his loyalty to the club.

“He has been brilliant this season and it is a major coup for us to have kept hold of him.”

Jansen’s men slipped to 13th in the National League North table after a narrow 1-0 defeat at in-form Alfreton.

The Chorley boss says he was disappointed with the result, but says he was missing a few key players and admitted that he was on the hunt for a new striker before Saturday’s clash at Victory Park against seventh-placed Tamworth.

He said: “I was disappointed.

“I thought a draw would have been the fair result.

“But we are missing a few key players.

“James Dean is injured, Josh Hine has left, Dale Whitham was ill and captain Andy Teague was not 100%.

“Missing players like that is going to take its toll on any team.

“We do want to get some new players in as soon as possible. We might have two or three players in the pipeline but I want to make sure they are the right players for the club.

“When you lose your top scorer (Hine) obviously you are looking to make a like-for-like replacement. We want to replace him as soon as we can. The play-offs are a little bit further away again but if we win all of our games in hand we will be back up there.”
