Grassroots football in central Lancashire calls a halt to the action

Grassroots football across the county came to a standstill at the weekend, in line with the decision made by the professional game in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Lancashire Sunday Football League has cancelled all fixtures until at least the weekend of April 4.

A statement on the league’s website read: “Following the guidelines issued by the Lancashire County FA earlier today, the Lancashire Sunday Football League has taken the decision to postpone all fixtures until April 3.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, but having considered the concerns of our member clubs and the current information available, this is the most responsible course of action to ensure the well being of all associated with the league.

“The league will continue to review the guidance from the government and Lancashire County FA and we will keep everyone informed of any further developments.”

The West Lancashire Football League called off all their fixtures on Saturday and this Wednesday, March 18, with a decision on this weekend’s games due to be made this week. The Mid Lancashire Football League has pulled the plug on all fixtures until April 4.

Alan Stuttard, secretary of the league, said on Friday: “In the light of the health concerns relating to coronavirus this is felt to be the most sensible and pragmatic approach to be taken at this time.

“As it is currently unknown how long the cancellations will continue for further information will be sent out early next week.

“Further information is expected from the Lancashire FA and there is a conference call being arranged with all 44 leagues covered by the LFA to discuss the approach being taken.”

And the Central Lancashire Junior Football League has also cancelled all games until next month. “In line with the current guidelines being issued by our governing body, the CLJFL have taken the decision to postpone all its fixtures until April 3.” they said in a statement.

“This decision has not been taken lightly but we feel considering the current concerns of our member clubs and current information this is the most responsible decision for us to take on behalf of all.

“We will continue to review the government guidelines as our number one priority is the health and well-being of all associated with our member clubs.”
