Chorley hoping to build on first victory of the season against Boro

Chorley’s victory over Marine on Tuesday night was proof that none of the players have lost belief despite a tricky start to the new National League North season.

That’s the view of boss Andy Preece, who witnessed his men bounce back from losing their opening two games to register their first points of the season in a 2-0 victory against the Mariners.

A couple of 2-1 defeats to Chester, on the opening day at Victory Park, and pre-season title favourites South Shields, away last weekend, were bitter pills for Preece and his men to swallow.

However, the fact that both of those teams currently occupy the top two positions in the table thanks to perfect starts to their campaigns offers a sense of perspective.

Preece believes his men could quite easily have had at least two points, if not four, from their opening two games and was thrilled to see his team finally get their just deserts in midweek.

“The lads have been really good,” said Preece. “The two games previous to the Marine game, I thought we played really well against two...well you could say, the two top teams in the league because at the moment they are first and second.

“To go to Marine and perform like we did was really good. Even though we thought, we performed really well, there is always that pressure when you haven’t won a game.”

This weekend, the Magpies are back on home turf when they host Scarborough Athletic. It promises to be another stiff task as Boro have won two of their opening three games.

“It will be nice to build on what we have done already,” Preece added. “I think it will be a really entertaining game because the way they play is really positive.

“They are a little bit like us, they get balls in the box and will always look to attack teams and play on the front foot. We have had a lot of good games against them, high-scoring. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
