Boston United 0 Chorley 2: Magpies now unbeaten in seven games

Another impressive performance revived memories of the recent FA Cup triumph at Peterborough, this deserved National League North victory extending their unbeaten run to seven games.

It was not the result Boston would have hoped for from the inaugural match at their new stadium but Chorley were clearly determined to be party-poopers.

Two up at the break, they showed resolve and organisation in defending their lead in composed fashion, resisting a spell of strong home pressure at the start of the second half before threatening to extend their lead in the closing stages.

There was drama at the quarter-hour mark when the Magpies were awarded two penalties in two minutes, both the result of fouls on livewire Connor Hall.

With nifty footwork the striker got the better of keeper Ross Fitzsimmons who brought him down but Elliot Newby drilled the first spot-kick wide of the upright.

Hall was then soon fouled again when clean through and this time took charge himself to hammer the second penalty into the back of the net.

Boston enjoyed plenty of possession but could not find a finish.

They had a great chance to equalise as the half-hour came up when Jordan Thewlis was sent through on goal but Matt Urwin raced off his line to pull off a brilliant save.

A couple of minutes later, the keeper dealt safely with an overhead kick by Luke Shiels following a corner.

It was Chorley who struck decisively again on 34 minutes.

Arlen Birch’s surging run won a corner and from Newby’s delivery Lewis Baines’ flick enabled Scott Leather to net his side’s second goal.

There was further home pressure in the 10 minutes after the break and Birch produced a superb headed goalline clearance to foil the hosts, Urwin tipping Dimaio’s follow-up over the bar.

But in the final third of the match, Chorley regained some control.

Newby was only just wide from a free-kick and both Ollie Shenton and Adam Henley had strong attempts blocked.

The Magpies cleverly ran down the clock in the closing minutes and in added time Will Tomlinson almost crowned the side’s great afternoon’s work with what would have been a wonderful goal.

Skipping past a trio of challenges when cutting in from the touchline, he finished with a shot which flew over the bar.
