He succeeded Walter Zenga who had only been in post since the end of July. The Molinuex outfit are the seventh club Lambert has managed. He started at Livingston before moving to Wycombe. From there he joined Colchester and then went to Norwich where he oversaw back-to-back promotions. Lambert had two-and-a-half years in charge of Aston Villa and six months at Blackburn.

MEET THE REF: Darren England

The Barnsley official will take charge of PNE for the first time on Sunday against Wolves. This is his second season on the Football League list as a referee but he was previously an assistant in the Premier League. Sunday’s game will be the second he has refereed in the Championship, having been in the middle for QPR’s win over Cardiff in March. In February, England refereed PNE youth team’s 3-1 defeat 
to Stoke in the last eight of the FA Youth Cup.

53 years ago: On May 2, 1964, North End were beaten 3-2 by West Ham United in the FA Cup final at Wembley. Alex Dawson and Doug Holden scored for Second Division PNE against their First Division opponents.

46 years ago: Preston won the Third Division title on May 4, 1971, winning 3-0 against Rotherham at Deepdale. Alan Spavin (2) and Clive Clark got the goals. The Lilywhites leapfrogged Fulham who they had beaten 1-0 at Craven Cottage three days earlier, pipping them to the title by a point.

21 years ago: It was party time at Deepdale as Preston were presented with the Third Division title trophy. A sell-out 18,700 crowd watched them beat Exeter City 2-0, Andy Saville and Steve Wilkinson scoring – that Saville’s 30th goal of the campaign.
