Brig equalised through Matt Dudley after Gilchrist had given the visitors a fifth-minute lead, before the Shields No.9 scored two goals from close range to decide the contest.

Gilchrist’s opener was the first clear-cut chance of the game, the striker tapping the ball home from close range after Brig had cleared Darius Osei’s effort off the line.

Jamie Milligan’s men then levelled the scores when Callum King-Harmes broke down the left, before cutting the ball back to Dudley, who finished with aplomb into the bottom corner in the 16th minute.

Danny Forbes then put the ball through the legs of a Shields defender before seeing his effort well saved by Myles Boney.

The visitors restored their lead on 34 minutes, Gilchrist getting enough of a touch on Osei’s low cross to divert the ball past Danny Roccia.

Brig almost inadvertently levelled the scoreline with a minute to play of the first half, King-Harmes’s cross catching out the goalkeeper and striking the far post.

The hosts then won a free-kick in the early stages of the second half, Macauley Wilson’s effort being spilled by Boney but then claimed at the second attempt.

Matt Lawlor then found himself on the right flank following a corner, and the Brig captain put in a cross that evaded everyone and went narrowly wide.

Shields, however, responded at the other end with their third goal, Gilchrist calmly finishing into the bottom corner in the 61st minute to complete his hat-trick.

Despite late pressure from Brig – including a deflected Forbes effort and Wilson’s header which looped on to the top of the netting – Shields maintained their advantage.
