Cricket round-up: McDonnell’s knock key to Leyland win over Vernon Carus

Nathan McDonnell struck a half-century to help Leyland to a seven-wicket win over Vernon Carus at Fox Lane.

The win kept Leyland at the top of Group C in this summer’s amalgamated Northern League and Palace Shield 40-over competition.

McDonnell’s 50 came as the home side were replying to the 147-9 which Vernons had put on the board after electing to bat first.

His fellow opener Karl Cross scored 38, with Ross Bretherton – batting at four– adding an unbeaten 38 as Leyland posted 148-3 to claim the points.

For Vernons, Ian Dunn had struck 54 at the top of the order, Daniel Cairns finishing 17 not out.

Bretherton, McDonnell and Kurtis Watson all claimed two wickets apiece.

In second place in the group are Chorley who had an 87-run win at Eccelston.

After winning the toss, Chorley chose to bat first and were 155-7 in their 40 overs.

They then bowled out their hosts for 68 inside 30 overs.

The other Group C game saw Euxton record a 37-run victory over Penwortham at Balshaw Park.

Invited to bat first, Euxton were 121 all out, opener Mark Winrow top scoring with an impressive 54.

Ashley Billington and Thomas Wilson took three wickets apiece.

In reply, Penwortham were bowled out for 84, Nipun Madaan scoring 37.

Fulwood and Broughton kept up their 100% record in Group B with a 106-run win over Preston at Highfield.

They put a commanding 199-8 on the board, Matthew Smith hitting 70 off 57 balls.

Smith’s time at the crease featured two sixes and nine fours.

There were knocks of 27 from Dominic Jackson and Simon Kerrigan.

Preston were 93 all out in reply, Shafwan Ilyas Musa Patel their top scorer with 21.

Jackson shone with the ball, returning figures of 5-9, Jon Fenton and Chris Brookes taking two wickets apiece.

Garstang were 106-run winners over Longridge in the derby clash at Riverside.

The hosts were 157-8, Ian Walling hitting an unbeaten 50 and Dan Curwen 38.

They then dismissed their visitors for just 51, Walling following-up his half-century with figures of 5-12.

In the same group, Great Eccleston beat Kirkham and Wesham by 94 runs.

Great Ecc were 143 all out before bowling out K&W for 49, Alexander Rhodes taking 4-11.
