The Magpies have been on a training camp in Alicante, where they played their latest pre-season friendly and announced a further signing ahead of the new season.

Friday night saw them beat Hercules CF’s U23s 4-0 thanks to goals from Max Hunt, Billy Whitehouse, Noel Brindle and Jack Moore.

“Really pleased with the workout,” Preece said of Chorley’s victory.

“Nice that we had a lot of the ball because that was something I said we needed to improve on, the way we moved the ball.

“We looked a little bit sharper with that today; nice to get another four goals, keep another clean sheet.

“It was quite a young side so it was important we did create and score like we did, so a really good workout.

“Getting used to playing in that heat is a useful workout for us and fortunately, we’ve come through unscathed.

“We’ve got tougher tests in pre-season which will show us where we are, I don’t expect us to be that close at this minute in time.”

That victory was followed by Saturday’s announcement that midfielder Sam Fielding had joined the club after leaving Marine.

Preece added: “I got a call out of the blue that Sam might be available.

“We’ve come up against him when he was at Farsley (Celtic), Bradford Park Avenue and, most recently, Marine.

“Knowing he was a local lad, there was always some contact or thoughts about him possibly coming to us.

“I know he didn’t want to leave Marine, he was really happy there, so the opportunity came and for us, he’s a great fit.

“He can play centre-back, centre midfield, he gets on the ball, he’s probably improved as a more forward-thinking midfielder this year.

“He knows the league inside out, potentially still got a little bit more as well, so a really good signing for us.

“I know he’s a little bit worried about getting a club at this point in the season, so he’s delighted that we’ve come in for him and we’re delighted to have him.”
