36. Looking back section Retired staff of post office ramblers club The photo depicted in 'looking back' shows retired members of departments in the Post Office and Telecom in October 1971, on one of their many walks together. They were all in their seventies at this time. Left to right: A. Piggott, T. Secker, S. Picking, W. Siddall, W. Shaw, T. Yates. My father Wilfred Siddall was a telephone engineer at Fulwood automatic exchange. He had to retire prematurely in 1961 as he was in the Singletoo Bank, Weeton, Train crash on 16 July 1961. He sustained severe injuries and loss of memory, but he recovered owing mining to his strength of character and high level of fitness. Nine years later he developed bowel cancer and had a colostomy operation. This did not deter him from continuing the rambles with his friends as seen in the photo, one year later. He lived to 92 years of age. The post office ramblers enjoyed their regular walks around Preston, Longridge , Lytham and St. Annes. They would chat on current affairs, reminisce on their post office days and colleagues past and present. Now so distant in time. John Siddall, Fulwood.
