Following massive recalls of faulty washing machines and tumble dryers in 2019, Whirlpool is adding to its list of recalled models.

These three additional models amount to an extra 5,000 machines being included in the ongoing recalls.

It was announced at the end of last year that some Hotpoint and Indesit washing machines sold between October 2014 and February 2018 were affected by a fault that can cause the door locking system to overheat which, in turn, creates the risk of a fire.

Whirlpool said, “When the heating element in the washing machine is activated, in very rare cases a component in the door lock system can overheat, which, depending on product features, can pose a risk of fire.”

At the time, in December 2019, 79 fires were thought to be attributed to this fault, which develops over time.

Whirlpool announced, “Ongoing analysis and investigation by our system team has identified a very small number of additional models which are affected by this fire safety risk.”

You can check your washing machine’s model number by looking on either the front or the back of the appliance. On the front, you’ll see the model number (which is a combination of letters and numbers) on the door, or on the back you’ll see it indicated by the letters ‘MOD’.

You can use the Whirlpool website to check whether your washing machine is part of the recalled models.

What if my model is affected by the recall?

After using the Whirlpool website to check if your washing machine is being recalled, you’ll be asked to register to the website in order to allow Whirlpool to contact you.

You’ll need to fill out an online form giving your name, email address, mobile number and home address. You’ll also need to indicate which retailer you purchased your machine from and where you heard about the recall.
