Here are 10 Disney films proving popular.
The Lion KingThe story of a cub that includes such songs as Can You Feel the Love.
MulanBy 1998 Disney was putting women in the role of hero, a far cry from Cinderella and Snow White, who were beautiful but needed saving by a prince. To save her father from death in the army, a young maiden secretly goes in his place and becomes one of China’s greatest heroines in the process.
Beauty and the BeastThis is one of my favourite Disney films. It has the pizzazz of Broadway, bowing to Busby Berkeley in numbers like Be Our Guest, The story of the romance between a beautiful girl and cursed prince saw Disney step up its game in terms of animation, script and score. It subsequently inspired a musical and live action film.
101 DalmatiansWhen a litter of Dalmatian puppies are abducted by the minions of Cruella de Vil, the parents must find them before she uses them for a diabolical fashion statement. Cruella is one of the nastiest villains in any genre, gloriously played by Glenn Close in the live action version. Not strong on score but cute rating of 10/10.
The Little MermaidMade in 1989, this began Disney’s revival and paved the way for Beauty and the Beast.Ariel is the feisty mermaid who ‘sells’ her voice to the wicked Ursula in return for a pair of legs so she can go in search of an earthly prince she has fallen in love with.A cracking score includes Under the Sea and Kiss the Girl.
The Lady and the TrampThe romantic tale of a sheltered uptown Cocker Spaniel dog and streetwise downtown mutt.I chose it because it has one of the best songs in any film, let alone Disney. He’s a Tramp is sung with sassines, sexiness and sultriness by the late, great Peggy Lee.
The Jungle BookAfter listening to the joyous Bear Necessities and I Wanna Be Like You on Junior Choice, I pestered my parents to take me to see the film. The story of ‘man-child’ Mowgli, brought up by jungle animals, surpassed expectations. Highlights were vocal talents of Phil Harris as Baloo as well as George Sanders as Shere Khan.
Robin HoodNot considered a classic as, by the time it was made in 1973, Disney has lost some of its class.I love it because I like stories about the outlaw Robin Hood, the man in Lincoln green who stole from the rich and gave to the poor.Terry Thomas voiced the wicked Sir Hiss.
TarzanPopular in Moldova, Romania and Slovakia (apparently!), I don’t get it. That’s because I was brought up on the black and white movies with Johnny Weissmuller as king of the jungle, the boy brought up by apes, and Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane. The Disney adventure features the vocal talents of Tony Goldwyn and Minnie Driver.
AladdinOne of the most popular Disney films worldwide, featuring one of the best vocal performances of the late Robin Williams as Genie.Based on the fairytale, it is the story of a poor boy in love with a princess. He finds a magic lamp, which is home to a genie who grants him three wishes.
