'We are constantly investing'- University of Lancashire seeks permission to extend its Preston library

“We are constantly investing in ongoing campus improvements”

The University of Lancashire is looking to extend the library on its Preston campus.

Last week, Preston City Council received a planning application for a single storey vestibule extension to the front of the university’s library building at 52 St Peters Square, Preston.

Plan documents reveal that the work involves the disabled access door directly to the east of the main library entrance.

The application was submitted by the university with the help of the planning agent, Preston based architecture and design firm FWP.

In the application form, it states that the existing site is an open outdoor paved area to the east of the existing accessible entrance door which is used for wheelchair access.

The applicant explains that the new external vestible is required to improve this disabled access as it “is currently not compliant”.

A University of Lancashire spokesperson told the Post: “We are constantly investing in ongoing campus improvements, and this project is to upgrade our current step free access into our 24/7 Library and create a small vestibule area to provide enhanced accessibility for all.”

Currently the disabled access door is a plain black glass double door, flush to the side of the main entrance.

Plan drawings show the new vestible will extend out by approximately 1.4 metres and the new external door will have a solid panel over it decorated with the University of Lancashire’s logo and signage.

The glass panels of the double doors will also be decorated with the university’s logo.

A new glazed panel handrail will be installed in the run up the door too.
