A Star Wars themed wedding sealed the love between Simon Holland and Amy McCabe.

The couple, from Ashton, tied the knot on May 4, National Star Wars Day, and incorporated the movie theme to help Simon feel it was as much his day as Amy’s.

It was through mutual friends that Simon and Amy met. They were just friends until a twist of fate changed everything.

Amy, 27, of Catterall, said: “Four and a half years ago, Simon was knocked off his motorbike on the way to see a Wigan Warriors game and was taken to hospital with a suspected broken neck.

“It’s funny how your perspective changes when someone is lying in a hospital bed – after a road accident, in a neck brace, looking helpless.

“I decided then, at that moment, that life would actually be more than awful if Simon wasn’t a part of it and I certainly couldn’t let that happen.”

They were married at St Helen’s Church, Churchtown, before a reception at The Villa, Wrea Green.

It was a beautiful and sunny day which was a relief after rain the day before and they travelled to the reception in vintage VW Campervans

Amy arranged a surprise after the reception meal for Simon with members of the 99th Garrison, a Star Wars Costume Group, to have photographs taken with the guests.

There were two storm troopers, a Darth Vader and Starkiller wandering around with lightsabers and blasters for photographs – Simon and the majority of the guests had no idea.

“I thought the theme would keep him interested.

“Choosing May the 4th meant that he would never have an excuse to forget our anniversary.”

The tables were named after some of the planets in the Star Wars Universe and the stationery was themed too.

The couple’s first dance was to Bless the Broken Road by Rascall Flatts as the lyrics reflected their relationship so well.

Amy added: “We could not have asked for a better day, all of the staff at the Villa were really accommodating, the food was fantastic and the entertainment was second to none.
