When and why soldiers will march through Leyland Town Centre to mark a special honour
On Saturday the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment will parade through Leyland Town Centre - here’s why.
It’s one of the highest honours a council can bestow.

The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment will parade through Leyland Town Centre to receive the Freedom of the Borough from the Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM.
Freedom of the Borough is an honorary title granted by a local council. Today it is largely ceremonial, but it has historical roots going back to medieval times.
The honour is often given to individuals, military units, or organisations in recognition of exceptional service to the local area, long-standing contribution to community life and strong historic links with the borough.
All are welcome to view the parade and rolling road closures will be in place.
The parade will take place on Saturday April 25 from 11.30am, as follows:
- Parade assembles at Kings Street
- Down Kings Street and turn left on Towngate
- Bear right onto Lancastergate
- Turn left onto Broadfield Drive
- Turn right onto West Paddock
- Arrive at the Civic Centre for Inspection Ceremony
The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment is the Infantry Regiment of the Northwest of England. The Regiment has one Regular battalion, one Reserve battalion and one affiliated battalion. Fierce, strong, and courageous, they are known as The Lions of England.

Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM said, “Granting the Freedom of the Borough to The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment is moment of great pride and I am delighted to be able to bestow the honour to the Regiment later this week.
“I truly hope that people will join the Regiment along their parade to celebrate their Freedom of the Borough and to reflect on their continued service to our community and country.”
Colonel of the Regiment, Brigadier Rob Singleton, said, “The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment has long and valued associations with South Ribble. We proudly cherish these close ties, and it is a great honour and privilege for the Regiment to exercise its Freedom for the first time by marching through Leyland.
“We look forward to sharing this special moment with the community and marking the occasion together.”
