Flood warnings have been issued for River Lostock, Shaw Brook and Bannister Brook in Leyland following persistent downpours today (Tuesday, October 6).

20mm of rain has reportedly fallen in the last three hours, causing river levels to reach "flood warning levels".

The Environment Agency says incident response staff are "continuing to monitor river levels and the weather forecast".

The Met Office predicts heavy rainfall to continue throughout the evening, with heavy rain forecast between 4pm and 9pm, meaning river levels are expected to remain high until tomorrow morning (Wednesday, October 7).

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Throughout the day scattered showers are widespread, becoming heavy at times, while skies are generally cloudy but with some sunnier spells.

"Areas of hill fog may persist into the afternoon. Breezy for many areas, with stronger wind in coastal areas."

Numerous roads across Lancashire are currently flooded as a result of the heavy rainfall, with Lancashire Police warning motorists to avoid the roundabout between Central Avenue and Buckshaw Avenue, Chorley.

Syd Brook Lane in Croston had also flooded and impassable, as well as Dawson Lane in Buckshaw Village.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We're receiving numerous calls about flooding this morning and it doesn't look as though the rain will ease much throughout the rest of the day.

"Please don't drive through flood water even if you think it isn't that deep.

"If you are concerned about your property make sure you turn off electrics and where possible move items to a higher level or second floor."

Heavy rainfall has also flooded the railway between Bolton and Preston, with all lines currently blocked.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said: "Following heavy rain flooding the railway between Bolton and Preston all lines will be reopened shortly.

"Train services running through these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 3.30pm."
