Vigil to be held at Worden Park tomorrow

Open to all, the vigil is aimed at showing solidarity and love to all those affected by the terrible events in Manchester on Monday.

The vigil will begin at Worden Park, Leyland at 5.30pm. The event is being hosted by the Mayor of South Ribble, Councillor Mick Titherington, in conjunction with Churches Together in Leyland and the community.

Mayor of South Ribble, Coun Titherington said: “Like everybody, we were left shocked and saddened as the events of Monday night in Manchester unfolded.

“We have since received the devastating news that two of the people killed were members of our community.

“Georgina Callander, an 18-year-old student at Runshaw College, and eight-year-old Saffie Rose Roussos, from Leyland lost their lives in this terrible incident. Two of our girls left home on Monday afternoon, excited to see their favourite pop star in concert. But they didn’t come home.

“Our first thoughts are with their families and friends and all those who were caught up in Monday night’s tragic events. We will do whatever we can to support them.

“We also thank our emergency services who worked through the night and volunteers who offered their help and support.

“We are united with our friends in Manchester. They have shown the world that their strength, dignity and sense of community is unbreakable.

“I urge residents to show solidarity and tolerance. The answer will not come from hate, but from love. As a borough we must stand together against those who seek to harm and divide us.”

People are urged to use the group’s Facebook event page to confirm if they are coming as numbers will determine where in the park the vigil is held.
