Leigh Doughty, 25, and bride Lucie, 24, were enjoying their first dance as man and wife to Ed Sheeran’s slowburner Tenerife Sea.

But a minute into the song the childhood sweethearts burst into a lung-busting, high-octane routine to a medley of pop hits, sparking a wild reaction from their guests.

YouTube footage of the pair’s secret surprise has now been viewed more than 1,500 times, while celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has retweeted it to his near 2.3million followers on Twitter.

Leigh, a PE teacher at Carr Hill High in Kirkham, where he studied, said: “The looks on people’s faces were priceless.

“We were dancing slowly and then about a minute into the Ed Sheeran song we burst into this routine.

“Lucie’s sisters and her mum were jumping up and down – they couldn’t believe it.

“Lucie is definitely a better dancer than me, a few of my mates called me The Tinman afterwards!”

The couple, who first started going out at their Carr Hill Year 11 Leavers Prom in 2006, had planned the dance for weeks prior to the nuptials at Willows Church in Kirkham, which was followed by the reception at The Villa in Wrea Green.

Leigh, brother of former Blackpool FC and AFC Fylde defender Phil Doughty, said: “We wanted to surprise our friends and family and talked about doing something like this when we got engaged.

“We have been practising the dance for the last couple of weeks after I asked two Sixth Form students at Carr Hill, who are in the school’s Dance Academy, to choreograph something for us.

“Lucie would come after work and practice it ready for the night.

“Only ourselves, the DJ and Ash Parkinson, who was singing the Sheeran song, knew what was about to happen.

“About a minute or so into the Ed Sheeran song, Lucie pushed me back and we went into this routine.

“It was great fun and it’s done really well on YouTube. Gordon Ramsay has retweeted us and Lucie’s sisters are trying to see how many more famous people they can get to share it.”

In the video, Sheeran’s song cuts out and is replaced by a medley of Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, Lil Jon’s Get Low and Mixalot’s I Like Big Butts – much to the delight and endless whoops of the audience.

Lucie (nee Marquis), who is also a PE teacher at Millfield High in Thornton, said: “I couldn’t wait to surprise everyone as people had been surprising us with little things all day.

“After the meal, we nipped upstairs for 20 minutes to practise it in my wedding dress!

“I loved it and seeing my mum’s reaction was worth all the effort, she was jumping up and down and screaming.

“My sister Rachel managed to get Gordon Ramsay to retweet the video of the dance and he’s even following her now so it’s all a bit crazy.”

But the couple, who live on Kirkham Road, Freckleton, will have to go some to beat British couple James Derbyshire and Julia Boggio.

They re-enacted the 1987 Dirty Dancing scene between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray on the dance floor at their reception in 2005 in a video that has been viewed more than three million times.
