Chorley police said the incident involving a Citroen DS4 - that also contained two passengers - and a Dacia Sandero was serious and that the road will be closed for some time.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “We were called by the police at 11.13am.

“They said two cars had collided head on and they were not sure if anyone was trapped.

“Two fire crews from Leyland and Chorley went to the scene and found that the male driver of each car were trapped.

“No other people were trapped.

“Both men were freed and taken by ambulance to the Royal Preston Hospital.”

The road was closed for just over two hours but was reopened by Lancashire police at 1.22pm.
