Emergency services were called to Lancaster Police Station on Thurnham Street at about 9pm on Saturday, where a blaze had started on the third floor.

Ten fire engines, two aerial ladder platforms and a command unit were called to the scene, and people were asked to avoid the area to try to reduce congestion.

Crews said the major response was to ensure sufficient firefighters with breathing apparatus were able to search the building for possible casualties, and there were none.

Police said the fire caused “minor damage” to two offices on the third floor.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances.

Chief Inspector Ian Cooper, of Lancaster Police said: “I’d like to reassure the public that this hasn’t affected our ability to police Lancaster and Morecambe over the last 24 hours as we have contingency plans to deal with such events, as rare as they are.

“The police station desk remains open to the public and all staff who usually work at Lancaster continue to do so.”
