Fire crews from across the area were called to the Yew Tree Inn in Nickleton Brow, Heath Charnock, at 5.30am on Sunday.

Two fire engines were initially sent to the scene following reports that flames were coming from the kitchen.

While they were on their way, smoke could be seen coming from the property, and another fire engine was called for.

Eventually, a total of six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were at the scene, from Lancashire and Greater Manchester.

Crews believed somebody was inside the pub, and four teams wearing breathing apparatus went into the building and conducted a finger-tip search.

They found that everyone had been accounted for, and nobody was inside.

Two hose reels were used, as well as a jet and an aerial ladder platform, to tackle the blaze.

A spokesman said two engines remained at the scene at about 8.45am.

It is thought the fire had spread to the roof, and internal areas of the pub have been destroyed.

An investigation was due to start later on Sunday.

A statement from the pub on social media said: “It is with the deepest sadness and regret that we will be closed until further notice.
