Man arrested under Terrorism Act after incident at Lancaster's St Peter's Cathedral

A 20-year-old man was initially arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and has now been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The incident occurred just before 1pm on Friday October 16 at St Peter's Cathedral in Balmoral Road.

It is understood that a man entered the cathedral during a funeral and attempted to attack the priest.

Greater Manchester Police, who are dealing with the incident, said: "Shortly before 1pm on Friday 16 October 2020, a 20-year-old man was arrested by Lancashire Constabulary officers on suspicion of racially aggravated assault following an incident during a funeral at Lancaster Cathedral.

"Due to the nature of the incident, the man was later arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT). He has since been detained under the Mental Health Act.

"Counter Terrorism Policing North West are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident alongside colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary."
