Traffic was temporarily held on the M61 northbound due to an earlier collision near Rivington Services.

A lane closure on the M61 northbound between junctions 6 (Horwich Interchange) and 8 (Chorley), after Rivington Services, resulted in heavy traffic this morning (February 27).

The closure was due to an earlier collision which occurred at around 7am.

A spokesperson for Highways said: "The M61 northbound BoltonWest/RivingtonServices (Rivington Blackrod) to J8 (Chorley A674 A6).

"One lane has been closed due to a collision.

"Traffic Officers are currently at scene.

"Recovery are on their way to the area to assist."

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the collision.

Highways confirmed the road had re-opened, but another incident involving a HGV has forced traffic officers to stop the carriageway again while they clear debris out of lanes one and two.
